Over three hundred students, faculty, staff, and members of the community rallied on Friday, March 3, 2000, at the university center at noon, kicking off the weekend’s “Labor Rights as Human Rights: At Home and Abroad” labor teach-in, and then marched peacefully to Andy Holt Tower where delegates met with Senior Vice Chancellor of Business and Finance Phil Scheurer, standing in for President Wade Gilley. The remainder of the demonstrators remained in Circle Park, singing and chanting during the 40-minute meeting. Secretary-treasurer of the AFL-CIO Richard Trumka, one of the delegates who met with Scheurer, reported that the meeting had been encouraging—that Scheurer supported the effort to pay workers a living wage and that the administration had agreed to meet again for further discussion. President Gilley, however, said on the following Monday that any funds coming to UT for salary increases would be prioritized with faculty at the top of the list. Gilley also indicated that if a living wage were to be implemented, students would be facing substantial increased costs. The student group Alliance for Hope held a “picket-action” in front of the Law College as part of the Campus Workers for a Living Wage Campaign in March, on the 32nd anniversary of the death of Martin Luther King Jr.
