Following the refusal to add the words sexual orientation to the EEO/Affirmative Action statement, Lambda Student Union and others complained of pervasive fear of reporting incidents of harassment because of sexual orientation and failure of the DRES (Disability Resources and Educational Services) office to investigate when complaints were made. Chancellor Snyder made clear in a letter to DRES director Camille Hazeur that DRES was to investigate all complaints of discrimination, of whatever kind. In October 1997, flyers, posters, and sidewalk chalking publicizing on-campus events being held in connection with National Coming Out Week had been taken down or erased by the day after the Lambda Student Union placed them on campus.
