Upon the recommendations of Chancellor William Snyder and President Joe Johnson, the board of trustees approved changes in the visitation hours in Type B and Type C housing at its June 1993 meeting. It was the first revision of visiting hours since implementation of the differentiated housing system in 1972. The Student Government Association conducted a survey of other universities’ policies and found that UT’s average of 24 hours of visitation a week ranked above those only of UT at Chattanooga and UT at Martin—45th in the study. The changes for Type B housing included an extension of hours. The new hours included no visitation on Monday through Thursday, noon to 2:00 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 2:00 p.m. until 11:00 p.m. on Sunday. Visitation hours for Type C housing were changed to 2:00–11:00 p.m. on Monday through Thursday, noon to 2:00 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, and noon to 11:00 p.m. on Sunday.
