Student Issue, 1987—Racism

Precipitated by an April 1987 incident in which a student African American couple was walking through the SAE Fraternity courtyard and was subjected to threats and racial slurs, the Black Faculty and Staff Association met with students to urge formation of better support infrastructures for African American students, faculty, and staff. Other incidents of perceived racism in the awarding of grades and general treatment on campus were voiced. African American faculty and student leaders also met with Student Affairs Vice Chancellor Philip Scheurer about the fraternity park incident, which he turned over to Student Conduct. In June, Chancellor Jack Reese appointed a Task Force on Race Relations to study the quality of life for African Americans at UT.
