Student Issue, 1986—Off-Row Fraternity Houses

The eviction by UT of Acacia fraternity from its house at the corner of Melrose and Melrose Place—UT contended Acacia refused to fix the heating system; Acacia contended that UT was responsible for the heating system and refused to fix it—led to a resolution passed by the Interfraternity Council calling for proper notification procedures and creation of a task force to assess the possibility of extended leases (from the current 30- to 60-day leases in effect) to justify investment. The resolution pointed to the fact that the older former residences on Melrose and Lake Avenues were in generally poor repair.
