Student Issue, 1985—Selection of Philip Scheurer as Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs

Four finalists for the position of vice chancellor for student affairs, vacant because of Dr. Howard Aldmon’s death, were interviewed for the post. They were Margaret Barr of Northern Illinois University; William Mendenhall of the University of Georgia; James Studer of Michigan State; and Philip Scheurer of UT, who had been serving as acting vice chancellor. In releasing the selection information to the Daily Beacon, Chancellor Reese admitted that there could be backlash from students and others who did not favor Scheurer for the position. Scheurer had been ranked third of the four by students across campus participating in the student ranking process. The appointment was controversial. The chair of the Commission for Women, Associate Dean of Law Mary Jo Hoover, resigned from the commission in a highly critical letter to the chancellor, and several students and student groups expressed their displeasure at the selection.
