Student Issue, 1985—Big Name Entertainment on Campus

In February 1985 Acting Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Philip Scheurer confirmed what students had already recognized—UT was unable to attract major entertainers to perform in Stokely Athletics Center because of the 17 percent amusement tax that had to be paid. Scheurer indicated in a Daily Beacon interview that prior to the imposition of the tax, concerts at Stokely produced $177,000 annually in amusement tax revenue; since the rate was raised, no revenue had been generated.  With the absence of shows at Stokely, the Campus Entertainment Board concentrated on bringing smaller shows to Alumni Memorial Building because it was not subject to the same tax restrictions as Stokely.
