The Student Government Association formed a task force in 1983 to study the existing refrigerator policy for dormitory rooms, which required that students rent refrigerators directly from a company with which UT had a contract. The contract with Consolidated Products Incorporated was to run out at the end of the school year. Students contended that CPI was providing poor service and a poor product and requested that students be allowed to bring or purchase their own refrigerators. Students suggested that resident assistants should sell stickers to be placed on student-owned refrigerators in order to reimburse UT for the cost of electricity. Vice Chancellor Howard Aldmon indicated that if there were problems with the performance of CPI they would be promptly addressed but that UT intended to maintain its policy.
