Student Issue, 1975—Closing of the Office of Special Services

In summer 1975 Dr. Howard Aldmon, vice chancellor for student affairs, announced that the Office of Special Student Services, which included the Office of Minority Affairs and the vestiges of the dean of women’s responsibilities, would be disbanded and plans would be made to incorporate its functions into other university offices. Ralph Boston, coordinator of minority student affairs and special student services, was offered the position of assistant director of financial aid following the decision but declined. He indicated he would be resigning in December to accept a position with Marvin Sugarman Productions to broadcast The Champions, a sports television program.

The Afro-American Student Liberation Force opposed the closing of the office and issued a resolution, which they discussed with Aldmon. In late September Aldmon announced that no move would be made to phase out the office until a committee could evaluate its functions more thoroughly. Dr. Richard Nash, director of the Student Counseling Center was appointed to chair a committee charged to “evaluate the office and its relationship to other special services offices on campuses.” Boston tendered his official letter of resignation on October 31, 1975.
