Student Issue, 1972—Playing “Dixie” and Waving Confederate Flags in Neyland Stadium

The UT Chapter of the ACLU passed a resolution in support of student pressure for the administration to outlaw the playing of “Dixie” and the waving of Confederate flags by University of Mississippi fans during the November 18 homecoming football game. Student Affairs Vice Chancellor Howard Aldmon issued a statement that spectators would not be allowed to bring large Rebel flags into the stadium, in keeping with university regulations that prohibited large banners that could obstruct visibility. Aldmon assured African American Student Liberation Force members that if a large flag or banner was taken into the stadium, UT police had been instructed to confiscate it. WJ Julian, UT director of bands, dispelled some of the apprehension by announcing that Mississippi would bring neither its marching band nor its pep band to the game.
