The Student Senate conducted a massive campus-wide voter registration drive in fall 1971, through which approximately five thousand students were registered to vote. The senate sponsored a march from the Presidential Complex to the courthouse on the last day to register for the November 4 city elections, and bus service every half hour from the university center to the courthouse was also provided. On the final day to register for the November 4 city elections, 1,171 people registered, most of them students. Linda Huddleston, a student from Sparta, filed suit against the Knox County Election Commission, alleging that her constitutional right to vote was violated when she was not allowed to register in Knoxville. In winter quarter 1972, the Student Senate continued the push for registration by bringing county registrars to campus to register more than six hundred students.
