In April 1961 the ROTC units showed ROTC students a film, Operation Abolition. The film, which had been shown to senior ROTC students in the preceding quarter, was a series of newsreel excerpts of student demonstrations in San Francisco during hearings there by the House Un-American Activities Committee. Two campus ministers—Reverend John L. Payne, director of the Presbyterian Student Center, and Reverend George S. Paris, director of the Wesley Foundation—had leaflets printed and stood for two days distributing them outside the ROTC Armory. The two ministers and some students protested that the film produced an impression unfavorable to Communism, and was designed to stir up anti-Communist feeling. Reverend Paris explained that he “objected to the film’s distorting the truth to stir up anti-Communist feeling and not to the stirring up of the feeling itself.” Other students reacted strongly against the actions of the ministers and students, branding them Communists. Payne reached an agreement with the Presbyterian Center’s board of directors that he would resign his post.
