In 2008 the Student Government Association proposed that the board of trustees enact a $10-per-year International Education Fee. The Center for International Education would administer the funds to provide scholarships for students studying abroad. The board of trustees approved the fee in June 2008. Beginning in fall 2008, the fee was assessed upon all full-time undergraduate students.
The first scholarships were awarded for spring semester 2009, when 59 students received them. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of financial need and academic merit.
