Student Aquatic Center—Outdoor Pool (Ira T. Sliger Jr. Pool)

In May 1985 the outdoor pool was closed because of sinkholes under the pool and surrounding apron. An underground water channel beneath the pool cracked the foundation. Serious consideration was given to relocating the pool but no better site could be found. The extent of instability of the soil under the pool required it to be completely rebuilt. It reopened on September 27, 1987.

At the rededication of the pool, Chancellor Jack Reese and Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs Philip Scheurer announced the name would be the Ira T. Sliger Jr. Pool. The bronze plaque located between the Aquatic Center Building and the pool reads: “Ira T. Sliger, Jr. / A Tennessee native, University of Tennessee graduate, and retired US Army Colonel; He served as Director / of the Student Aquatic Center from 1966 until his / retirement in 1986. The Colonel’s dedication / and leadership to the student recreation program / inspired the slogan “Fun for Everyone.” / This pool is dedicated to his 20 years of faithful service to The University and its students. / September 1987.”
