The first Steward’s House, built in 1835, was completely destroyed in the Civil War, during federal occupancy of the house. Following the war, the West Dwelling House was rented to M. W. Janney and the East Dwelling House to A. K. Foster, with the understanding that the two men would board students with “wholesome fare” at $2 per week. The West Dwelling House, known as the Janney Building, was enlarged and served the function of the steward’s house (mess hall) after 1872. The Janney Building was razed in 1908.
