Steve DeLong attended the university from 1961 to 1964. He was selected as a two-time All-Southeastern Conference and All-American as a middle guard in 1963 and 1964. He was UT’s first Outland Trophy winner in 1964. He was a first-round draft pick of the San Diego Chargers in 1965 where he played for seven years before ending his career as a member of the Chicago Bears in 1972. He was inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame in 1989 and into the National Football Hall of Fame in 1993. He was inducted into the Virginia Hall of Fame in 2000.
