Chancellor Cheek, joined by Jim and Natalie Haslam and Jim and Sandra Powell, announced on June 13, 2011, that a $3.5 million campaign was underway to make UT an All Steinway School when the new Natalie L. Haslam Music Center opened. To receive the All Steinway School status, at least 90 percent of an institution’s pianos must be Steinway-designed pianos. UT needed to purchase 61 pianos, including upright pianos and grand pianos from six to nine feet. Jim and Sandra Powell made the lead gift to the campaign, in recognition for which Chancellor Cheek announced that the recital hall would be named the Sandra G. Powell Recital Hall. Representatives from Steinway, School of Music faculty, and donors to the school also attended the event, held at the Howard H. Baker Jr. Center for Public Policy.
