In 1966, as part of the renaming of streets throughout the campus following the Yale Avenue Renewal Project, Fifteenth Street from West Cumberland through New Detroit Avenue was renamed Stadium Drive. The road behind South and East Stadia was named South Stadium Drive. In the 1880s, the name of the street was Clifton Street, which became South Seventh Street before becoming Fifteenth Street. Mayor Victor Ashe personally requested that a street be named for Fulmer following the 1998 football national championship. In the summer of 1999, the Metropolitan Planning Commission chose to replace the name Stadium Drive, calling it Philip Fulmer Way.
