The Southern Sociological Society was founded (as the Southeastern Sociological Society) at meetings held at UT on April 20, 1935. William E. Cole, UT sociology professor, who had long advocated such an association, was in charge of the gathering of leading sociologists of the area. Dr. E. T. Krueger of Vanderbilt was elected the first president, with Dr. Cole being named a vice president.
