Sigma Gamma Rho, a historically African American sorority whose purpose is primarily service and achievement, was established at UT in 1990. The national organization was established in 1922 in Indianapolis at Butler University by seven young educators and became an incorporated national collegiate sorority with the granting of Alpha Chapter to a group at Butler University in 1929. Founded in the midst of segregation, Sigma Gamma Rho is the only sorority of the four historically African American sororities that comprise the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) established at a predominantly white institution. The flower of Sigma Gamma Rho is the yellow tea rose; its colors are royal blue and gold; its mascot is the poodle.
