The Student Chapter of Habitat for Humanity first installed a shantytown of cardboard boxes on the Humanities Building lawn in November 1997. The effort was to educate students about homelessness and poverty. Students were invited to spend the night in the boxes. Chancellor Bill Snyder and representatives from the Salvation Army, Knox County Rescue Mission, Knox County Community Action Committee, and Alliance for Hope spoke.
