Sergei Rachmaninoff, composer, pianist, and conductor, played his final concert in Alumni Memorial Building on February 17, 1943. A plaque in the building commemorates this concert. He was originally scheduled to perform on November 9, 1942, but had to cancel because of illness. On February 17, 2013, Russian pianist Evgeny Brakhman honored the 70th anniversary of Rachmaninoff’s final performance by playing Rachmaninoff’s pieces in the Cox Auditorium. The Evelyn Miller Young Pianist Series partnered with the School of Music and the College of Arts and Sciences for the free event, which drew a standing-room-only crowd.
