September 11, 2001, Terrorist Attacks—One-Year Commemoration

UT students and members of the Knoxville community gathered in Circle Park on the evening of September 11, 2002, for a candlelight vigil commemorating the one-year anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. An American flag and a torch illuminated the front of the gathering as the Love United Gospel Choir began the vigil with a song. Student Government Association President Elizabeth Clement and Provost Loren Crabtree spoke. Mike Buckley, vice chair of the Campus Ministers’ Council, gave the invocation. Clement and Crabtree lit candles from the torch and passed the flames to others in a silent moment following the invocation, and the Love United Gospel Choir led the singing of “America the Beautiful.” The crowd dispersed with their candles onto the campus.
