Sculptures, Outdoor—Rust Never Sleeps [Al Frega]

The chair and table, made from found-and-recycled industrial castoff material, is the work of Al Frega of Durham, North Carolina. Rust Never Sleeps was purchased for the Reese Sculpture Collection in 1989. Frega, an upper New York State native who earned the MFA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, creates series of elements that sometimes include benches, bicycle racks, and structural signage. His artwork embellishes the American Tobacco Trail in Durham and Wake Counties in North Carolina and the North Carolina Museum Trail in Raleigh. His best-known work in Durham is Art in Architecture, commissioned by Richard Morgan for Peabody Plaza. His foundry-studio in Durham is a 10,000-square-foot stone barn that was once Durham’s livery stable and home to Durham’s fire wagons.
