In 1999 David and Jeff Towe of Towe Iron Works fabricated and installed Connections, a steel sculpture that displays the various methods of steel framing and connections (welds). The design for the sculpture, a piece of artwork as well as a teaching device, has been provided by the American Institute of Steel Construction for use at universities, and UT is one of more than 125 institutions to have one. UT’s sculpture is just outside Perkins Hall. Twenty standard structural connections are demonstrated by the sculpture. The concrete circular base filled with mulch, in which the sculpture is installed, was designed by a Civil Engineering 435 class.
