Although drawing and other art courses were taught in the art program within the College of Home Economics soon after the turn of the century and summer classes were provided in art as early as 1928, the School of Art, as a fine arts program, dates from 1948, when C. Kermit Ewing came to Knoxville to establish the program within the new Fine Arts Department, which also housed Music. In 1965 Departments of Art and of Music replaced the Department of Fine Arts, and in 1999 the names of the programs were changed to School of Music and School of Art.
