An Army Air Corps Unit was established within the ROTC program in 1946. With the passage of the Armed Forces Unification Act in September 1947, the name of the Army Air Corps was changed to United States Air Force. The full separation of the air force from the army was complete on July 11, 1949. As a result of the separation, the Air Force ROTC became a program on an equal footing with the Army ROTC. In 1957 a flight training program was initiated, through which senior cadets earned a private pilot’s license prior to graduation. The Air Force ROTC moved into Stokely Athletics Center in October 1966. Compulsory ROTC for freshman and sophomore men was discontinued in fall 1967.
