Tennessee’s first three-time All American (guard) entered UT in 1937. He was All-American in 1938, 1939, and 1940 and won the Knute Rockne trophy. The Football Writers Association named him to the all-time All-American team, and he was named to the all-time Southeastern Conference team for 1900–1950 in 1982. He was named to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1961. He played professional football for the Philadelphia Eagles, being named to the All-Pro team in 1941. His professional career was cut short as he entered the US Navy. He was a line coach at North Carolina State from 1946 to 1951.
