In 1952 the UT Rifle Team (part of the minor sports program of the university sponsored by the Athletics Department and coached by UT’s ROTC Military Detachment) won the Camp Perry Grand National Indoor Rifle Meet at Boonville, Maryland, for the third consecutive time. This was the first time a team had won three years in succession since the meet was established in 1925. Daniel E. Puckel of Memphis shot 122 consecutive bulls eyes from a prone position in the meet. (Three times of his four undergraduate years, Puckel was chosen as one of the 10 best college marksmen.) For being named to the National Rifle Association’s All-America team (1954) he received a gold bullet and a certificate.
