Research and Education Center at Milan

In 1962 the UT Agricultural Experiment Station received, as surplus property from the US Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, 488 acres on which the Milan Experiment Station was established. The land was acquired through the Milan Army Ammunition Plant and the US Army Corps of Engineers, subject to the requirement of 20 years’ utilization for research purposes. The research was directed toward improving the principal crops of corn, cotton, soybean, grain, sorghum, and wheat. In 1975 an additional 25 acres of land was obtained through government surplus channels, and in 1982 an additional two hundred acres were leased. One of the major research emphases of this station is in no-till farming, and three thousand to six thousand people regularly attend the annual Milan No-Till Field Day, started in 1981. The name was changed to Research and Education Center at Milan in 2005.
