UT students from Up to Us, SPEAK, UT Economics Club, Project Veggie, and Net Impact teamed up during the 2014 Recyclemania event to create a box fort to raise awareness of conservation, recycling, and the large national debt. The project involved forming 4,800 cardboard boxes into a Power T near the Humanities and Social Sciences Building, with each box representing over $200 billion of indebtedness. The box fort was 6 feet tall, 72 feet long, and 80 feet wide. Other universities participating in Recyclemania had constructed box forts, but UT’s fort beat the previous record of 4,123 boxes. Up to Us is a national debt awareness program in which the UT Economics Club annually takes part.
