On April 26, 1986, UT fans numbered 73,801 at the 7:00 p.m. Orange and White Football Game in Neyland Stadium. A record $25,000 was raised by the spring game for the Neyland Scholarship Endowment. The effort built upon the euphoria of winning the Sugar Bowl in January and far surpassed the 36,000 attendance in 1981, which had been bested only the week before Tennessee’s crowd gathered at the University of Iowa, where 40,250 fans attended the spring game. In 2006 the University of Alabama beat UT’s record by having 92,000 fans in attendance at their intrasquad game.
