Dr. Ralph Dunford joined the UT faculty in 1926 as assistant professor of psychology. He earned the bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Ohio State University, and upon completion of his PhD degree in 1929, he was promoted to associate professor at UT. He became a full professor in 1936. From September 1940 to fall 1943, Dunford was on loan to TVA as head of personnel selection. He returned to UT in 1944 as dean of men (later dean of students), a position he held until his retirement in 1967. The Dunford Art Collection was named for him at the time of his retirement, and a memorial band scholarship was established in his name upon his death in 1973. Dunford Hall is named for him.
