A psychological clinic began in May 1948, under the direction of Dr. Axel Brett. Its purpose was to train clinical psychologists. (UT’s doctoral program in clinical psychology was first accredited on February 9, 1949.) Its stated scope of effort was to provide students with consultation on personal problems, vocational guidance, and scholastic advice. The UT Psychological Clinic is a university-based agency that provides outpatient psychological services to Knoxville area residents. It is operated through the UT Psychology Department, and services are provided by doctoral students in the clinical psychology program under the supervision of fully licensed clinical psychologists. The clinic was originally separated physically from the Department of Psychology. It moved from its location at 1303 Cumberland Avenue to Austin Peay in October 1976 when the building was occupied by the Psychology Department and moved to the Conference Center Building in 2012.
