Associate Professor of English Dr. Lorraine Burghardt resigned on September 2, 1989, following a charge of plagiarism. The journal Notes on Contemporary Literature published a retraction in its March 1990 edition attributing the article “Beyond Realism: The Role of Arthur in Edward Bond’s Early Morning” to Dean Bethea, a former UT graduate student, then a professor at the College of Idaho. Bethea had been a student in Burghardt’s class, had written the paper for the class, and had received an A on it. The article was first published in Notes in April 1988 under the authorship of Burghardt.
