On May 19, 1919, the largest national journalistic fraternity, Pi Delta Epsilon, installed the Beta Epsilon Chapter at UT. Membership required service for two years on publications of the university. Pi Delta Epsilon was founded in 1909 at Syracuse University. The colors of the honorary society were olive and gray. Women were admitted to the fraternity in 1937. Pi Delta Epsilon and Alpha Phi Gamma merged into a new organization, the Society for Collegiate Journalists, on June 1, 1975.
