Phi Eta Sigma (Freshman Scholastic Honorary Society)

Phi Eta Sigma, founded at the University of Illinois on March 22, 1923, is a national scholastic honorary society for freshmen with a 3.5 grade point average. The Tennessee chapter was installed May 17, 1930, with Tom Dunlap as the first president. Originally, membership was limited to men. Phi Eta Sigma distinguished itself for many years at UT by producing How to Study pamphlets to incoming freshmen and to students of all classes. The organization also awarded a plaque to the faculty member deemed by the organization to have made the greatest contributions toward student scholastic achievement on campus.
