Pep Club

The Vol Pep Club was formed in 1950 to increase school spirit. It initiated the Homecoming Queen contests and instituted pep rallies in the Rose Hole (the site of the large dormitory behind the law school) the night before each home football game, occasions that often featured a bonfire. It also sold orange and white shakers at the football games.

In 1953 the club included activities other than football games in its spirit efforts, and also in 1953 the All Student Council decided to disband the group. Like the Beaver Club, the organization’s membership was chosen from each fraternity and sorority and from the university as a whole. In 1955 the functions of the group were, like those of the Beaver Club, assumed by Adawayhi. In 1973 the Big Orange Pep Club was established, broadening the scope of activities of the Pep Club. The group changed names several times, and in 1992 the Volunteer Pep Club became the official name when the members began working directly with the Athletic Department. For the 1998–99 year, the Volunteer Athletic Scholarship Fund became the official sponsor of the Pep Club, and the name was changed to VASF Collegiate Club. In 2004 the scope of the club sponsored by the Athletic Department was broadened, and the group was renamed Orange Nation.
