Pedestrian Bridge Over Cumberland Avenue

UT announced in October 1965 that the pedestrian bridge (originally called a “crosswalk”) across Cumberland Avenue at Strong Hall would be built, with a completion date prior to the end of the year. The pedestrian bridge was designed by Bruce McCarty and Associates and constructed by Rentenbach Construction Company. The concrete bridge was precast by Southern Cast Stone. The overall length was 150 feet, with 90 feet of clear span. The overall width was 12 feet, but the width between the handrails was 9 feet. It was of prestressed, precast concrete, and the arch consisted of two sections. Students called the bridge “Andy’s Arch”.

In 1966 Bruce McCarty and Associates was presented an Award of Merit for their design of the pedestrian bridge by the Gulf States Region of the American Institute of Architects. The bridge is named for William Nolan, the first student representative to the UT Board of Trustees, and named to the one-year student term in 1974.
