Parking around the periphery of the Hill and on Middle Drive was established in the early part of the twentieth century. In January 1921 parking was banned from the top of the Hill until Ayres Hall could be completed. Parking in front of the Austin Peay Building was established with the renovation and expansion of the former Carnegie Library into the administration building. In the late 1970s, the back Ayres lawn was paved to provide additional parking for professors whose offices were in Hill buildings. In 2004 all parking other than handicapped parking, service vehicles, and 15-minute drop-off parking was removed from the Hill to reinstitute green space.
