Although Beck’s design for the Volunteer Statue was chosen as the symbol of UT in 1931, an expression in bronze was not placed on the campus until 1965. Beck, a Yale University fine arts student when he entered the contest to design a symbol for UT subsequently received the BFA from Yale.
