National Football Coach of the Year

Two UT head football coaches have been named the national football coach of the year. Bowden Wyatt was named in 1956 by the American Football Coaches Association. Phillip Fulmer was named in 1998 by the American Football Coaches Association, the Football Writers Association, the Maxwell Football Club, and the Sporting News.

In spring 1964 the College of Education (now the College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences) required (effective for students graduating in winter quarter 1965 and thereafter) that graduates seeking a recommendation for a teacher’s certificate had to take the National Teacher Examination to receive an endorsement from UT.
