LeaderShape

LeaderShape, a six-day program that focuses on development of leadership skills, integrity, partnerships with others, and personal growth, was initiated at UT in 2012. The institute was created in 1986 by Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity and became a separate not-for-profit program in 1988. Approximately 60 students are annually selected by Student Life to participate.

Leadership Conference

The first annual leadership conference for student leaders representing organizations across campus was held in March 2002. It was entitled United Through Leadership.

Leadership Knoxville Scholars

The Division of Student Life’s Center for Leadership and Service teamed up with Leadership Knoxville in 2013 to create the Leadership Knoxville Scholars, which featured a variety of different programming and course work and opportunities to connect with community leaders and work with them on various projects. Learning Communities

UT’s residential learning communities for freshmen had their beginnings in the late 1980s with the Volunteer Community. Other learning communities included Design Community, Engage Community, and Honors Community.

LEED Certification Policy

In September 2007 then-Chancellor Loren Crabtree announced a campus green building policy. The policy, the first of its kind at a Tennessee college or university, required that buildings constructed on campus that cost more than $5 million and any major renovations of campus buildings conform to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design standards. The UT Legal Clinic was established in 1947, the second in the country (the first was at Duke and was established in 1931). Two programs through which UT Knoxville students serve as paid interns working with state legislators are operated through the Political Science Department.
