LeaderShape, a six-day program that focuses on development of leadership skills, integrity, partnerships with others, and personal growth, was initiated at UT in 2012. The institute was created in 1986 by Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity and became a separate not-for-profit program in 1988. Approximately 60 students are annually selected by Student Life to participate.

The first annual leadership conference for student leaders representing organizations across campus was held in March 2002. It was entitled United Through Leadership.

The Division of Student Life’s Center for Leadership and Service teamed up with Leadership Knoxville in 2013 to create the Leadership Knoxville Scholars, which featured a variety of different programming and course work and opportunities to connect with community leaders and work with them on various projects. UT’s residential learning communities for freshmen had their beginnings in the late 1980s with the Volunteer Community. Other learning communities included Design Community, Engage Community, and Honors Community.
