First Women’s Athletics Scholarships

In fall 1976 funding for 10 scholarships ($25,000) was provided for women’s athletics. First Women’s Athletics Trophy

The first trophy awarded to a UT women’s athletic team was the first place trophy won by the volleyball team in 1959 at the East Tennessee State University’s invitational volleyball tournament. Female students in the UT Physical Education Department asked their instructor, Jean Wells, to take them.

First Women’s Golf Team Tournament Championship

In spring 1994 the golf team fired a 311 in the final round of the Lady Gamecock Classic, giving the team its first-ever team tournament championship. The number 12 Tennessee three-day total of 901 set a team record for 54 holes, while their first-round score of 294 set a UT women’s record for 18 holes.

First Women’s Heavyweight Boxing Title

On July 17, 2002, alumna and former Lady Vol basketball player Vonda Ward defeated Monica McGowan of Tyler, Texas, for the world’s first women’s heavyweight boxing title offered by the International Boxing Association.

First Women’s Physical Education Teacher

Appointed in 1900 Anne Gibson was the first physical education teacher for women. Prior to this, on certain days of the week, women were admitted on sufferance to the university gymnasium, where they could use the basketball courts and other equipment.

First Women’s Student Government Association

When women were readmitted to the university in 1893, the acting dean of women, Angie Villette Warren Perkins, assisted them to form a student government organization, which was named The Woman’s League of the University of Tennessee. The constitution of the organization was published in 1895.

First Woodrow Wilson Fellow

Paul Russell Haley, a UT psychology major, was one of the one hundred students chosen to receive the first Woodrow Wilson National Fellowships in the inaugural year of the grants, 1970.

First Year Studies
