First Stop-Smoking Clinic

UT’s first on-campus Stop-Smoking Clinic was held February 28–March 3, 1975, in the Health, Physical Education, and Recreation (HPER) Building. The UT Health and Safety Department, the East Tennessee Heart Association, and the Seventh Day Adventist Church sponsored the clinic. It was free.

First Student Activities Fee

An “incidentals fee” of $2.50 per session was imposed in 1869–70, although the fee was not limited to provision of student activities. The board of trustees first passed imposing a student activities fee in 1928 to take effect for fall 1929.

First Student Association

The first student association (The Students’ Association) was formed in 1901. It adopted a constitution and bylaws on September 29, one day after being proposed. Its first president was James T. Cox, and it adopted the colors orange and white at its September 29 meeting.

First Student Board of Trustees Member

William B. Nolan, a graduate student in the College of Business, was the first student member of the board of trustees. First Student Killed in Vietnam

On January 16, 1968, the Navy Department announced that former UT Ranger Harry Hodges was killed while on guard duty in a fortified tower in Da Nona, South Vietnam. Hodges, a Seabee, attended UT in 1966. UT’s Rangers met their former comrade at McGhee Tyson Airport and served as pallbearers at his funeral.

First Student Loan Fund

In 1902 Professor Charles Ferris, chairman of a student aid committee of the faculty, appeared before the board of trustees to urge establishment of a student loan fund.
