First Scholarships for Tennessee Community College Alumni

In 1971 the board of governors of the UT Alumni Association established scholarships of $500 to be offered to the top two graduates of Tennessee community colleges. These were the first scholarships established for community college alumni by a Tennessee university.

First SEC Triple Crown Track Champion

In 1964 the men’s track team won its first SEC outdoor track title and also won the cross-country and indoor track titles. UT was the first institution in SEC history to hold the three titles simultaneously.

First Shot Put National Title

Aaron Ausmus outdistanced fellow SEC competitors from Louisiana State University and South Carolina to win the NCAA national indoor shot put title with a throw of 62-4.5 in 1997.

First Silo in Tennessee

John McBryde, professor of agriculture, horticulture, and botany, advocated the use of ensilage as cattle feed. Under his direction in 1884, the university built the first silo in Tennessee and one of the first in the South.
