Back Bill Newman was the first All-Star selection in 1900. In 1902 end Joey Bean and back T. Nash Buckingham were named.
In 1884 the Chi Delta Crescent reported that a football club had been organized but that another club needed to be organized so that games could be played. Two years later the Crescent deplored that although there was much interest in the sport, the university had never had a regularly organized football team.
The first intercollegiate football game (1891, against Sewanee) was captained and coached by H. K. Denlinger, who directed the athletic program of the YMCA. The first person to be hired specifically as a football coach was J. A. Pierce in 1899.
In 1914 UT won the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association championship.
