First Female Olympic Medalists

Pat Head Summitt, Patricia Roberts, and Cindy Brogden won silver medals at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal as members of the women’s basketball team. Pat Summitt was cocaptain. The first time that women’s basketball had been elevated to Olympic status was in 1976. In 1984 Summitt coached the US team to a gold medal.

First Female PhD Recipient

In 1952 Minnie Cate Morrell earned the PhD in English (the second PhD awarded by the department). Her dissertation was on English Psalters—“A Manual of Old English Biblical Materials.” It was subsequently published in book form.

In 1986 Dr. Anne Mayhew, UT economics professor, was elected the first female president of the Association for Evolutionary Economics. AFEE is an international organization of economists and other social scientists devoted to analysis of economics as evolving, socially constructed, and politically governed systems. AFEE publishes the Journal of Economic Issues.
