Three College of Veterinary Medicine veterinarians— Dr. Frank Andrews, Dr. Jim Blackford, and Dr. Eleanor Green—were part of the official team of veterinarians for the equestrian events, held at the Georgia International Horse Park in Conyers, Georgia. They volunteered and were chosen to be part of the 48-member veterinary team. They were chosen in part because of a six-year study they and University of Georgia veterinary faculty participated in that involved monitoring more than five hundred horses during several competitions to help determine what conditions and course designs were most beneficial in protecting horses competing during severe weather conditions—such as heat. Course modifications because of severe weather conditions were to be based on the research of the UT-UGA team.
