In 1984 nine Pride of the Southland Band members were chosen to march and play with the six-hundred-member Olympic All-American Band. They performed at the opening ceremonies and then as part of smaller units that played at individual events. The number of band members selected from UT was very high—generally, only one representative from a college was chosen, with most multiple selections coming from California institutions, which comprised the bulk of the band membership. Students received paid expenses and airfare and were housed in Pepperdine University dormitories. Assistant Band Director Walter H. McDaniels also worked with the Olympic band, helping to chart the marching shows. Students selected were Philip A. Lundy, Mark F. Vowell, Randall S. McCoy, Patrick P. Burke, M. Janell Trew, Douglas S. Wheeling, Michael D. Smith, Lucinda A. Davis, and Angela Wyatt.
